The World Future Energy Summit and Exhibition (WFES), the most influential energy event in the Middle East, was held in Abu Dhabi from 16-18 April. PV Tech was in attendance, and 700W solar panels were among the highlights of the event.   Judging from the products on display, n-type solar panels has become the mainstream technology of this exhibition. Among them was Sunman Energy’s Dragonfly module, a 520W glass-free lightweight module made of polymer composite materials. This attractive new module plus installation system weighs just 4.1kg/㎡, which is 60% lighter than conventional glass modules.   At the exhibition, Trina Solar and JinkoSolar not only displayed modules but also unveiled their storage products. In particular, Trina Solar showcased its innovative and upgraded products, such as the Vertex n-type module, which will soon be deployed in the Philippines; Elementa 2, the new generation of flexible storage battery compartment; the upgraded Vanguard 1P intelligent tracking solution; and the Tiance cleaning robot.

  China Energy Construction Group Co., Ltd. recently announced that Andiyan Prefecture in Uzbekistan has launched the 150MW/300MWh Lodge Energy Storage Project, my country’s largest single electrochemical energy storage system project invested overseas. The project started on March 25, local time, marking a solid step taken by China Energy Construction in the overseas energy storage field. This is not only the first foreign-invested electrochemical energy storage project in Uzbekistan, but also the first overseas energy storage project invested by China Energy Construction. The subsidiary Gezhouba Ocean Investment Company is responsible for the investment, and the Central South Electric Power Design Institute is responsible for the EPC general contracting. This project covers an area of about 6 hectares, with a total investment of US$140 million (about 1 billion yuan). It uses lithium iron phosphate batteries and is scheduled to be put into commercial operation by the end of 2024. Once completed, it will greatly enhance the power regulation capability of the local power grid and is expected to provide 2.19 billion kilowatt-hours of power support. On the same day, China Energy Construction also launched another project in the country, the 150MW/300MWh energy storage project in Oz, Fergana State. Zhongnan Electric Power is also responsible for the EPC general contracting. Both projects are one of the key projects of the “Belt and Road” 10th Anniversary Summit Forum and China-Uzbekistan production capacity cooperation.   The European Parliament has approved a law requiring member states to deploy solar installations on buildings and renovate them to improve their energy efficiency. The proposed revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) includes several targets to reduce emissions. For example, member states of the EU will need to deploy solar panel installations progressively in public and non-residential buildings and all new residential buildings by 2030, when applicable.   All new buildings should be zero-emission by 2030, while new buildings occupied or owned by public authorities should be zero-emission by 2028.   The law also requires member states of the EU to take into account the lifecycle global warming potential of a building, including the production and disposal of the construction products used to build it.   For residential buildings, member states of the EU will be required to roll out measures to reduce the average primary energy use by at least 16% by 2030 and at least 20-22% by 2035. The worst-performing 26% of non-residential buildings in terms of energy efficiency must be renovated by 2030.   “The directive shows clearly how climate policy can have real and immediate benefits for the less well-off in our society. This law will help bring down energy bills and address the root causes of energy poverty,” said Ciarán Cuffe, rapporteur for the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.   According to the European Commission (EC), buildings in the EU are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions.   Jan Osenberg, senior policy advisor at SolarPower Europe, said: “As the grid catches up to the energy transition, installing energy generation where we use energy will also help the grid, by keeping electricity local and empowering citizens with the information and technical ability to use electricity smartly.”   Last December, the European Parliament and the EC reached a provisional agreement on the strengthened EPBD. In the same month, the EC called on Europe’s governments to “enhance their efforts” to accelerate the energy transition, having assessed the revised National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) for a number of European countries.
