The largest in China! 2.4GWh energy storage officially started!

Dec 27, 2024

It is reported that on December 25, the largest electrochemical energy storage project in China, the Longdong to Shandong UHV DC transmission project supporting new energy energy storage system project, officially started construction in Huanxian County, Qingyang City.

The Longdong to Shandong UHV DC transmission project is one of the major projects determined to be implemented in the National "14th Five-Year Plan" Outline and the Yellow River Basin Ecological Protection and High-quality Development Plan. It is also my country's first UHV project for "wind, solar, thermal and storage integration" power transmission. Among them, the new energy supporting energy storage project of Huaneng Longdong Energy Base is configured according to 10% of the installed capacity of new energy and a 4-hour scale, with a total capacity of 600 MW/2400 MWh. It is divided into two sites for construction, and a 300 MW/1200 MWh electrochemical energy storage power station is built at each site.

It is understood that the energy storage power station adopts the single-stage distributed energy storage technology independently developed by Huaneng. It is composed of hundreds of battery cells connected in series to form a battery cluster. Each battery cluster is distributed through a single low-power PCS for energy processing. The battery is only connected in series and not in parallel, and the battery cluster is independently controlled. Multiple PCS modules are connected in parallel on the AC side. This technology is more compatible with batteries and can achieve one cluster one management; each distributed converter series battery cluster is smaller in scale, more integrated, and more refined, eliminating the impact of centralized parallel circulation and capacity loss, and the operation and maintenance are simple and flexible. It has advantages in the consistency of battery cluster working state, system capacity availability, cycle life, and system availability under faults. The average comprehensive efficiency is about 4.6 percentage points higher than that of centralized technical route power stations, and the average available capacity retention rate is about 5 percentage points higher.

The project is planned to be completed and put into operation simultaneously with the Longdong to Shandong UHV DC transmission project in the first half of 2025. After completion, it will consume about 840 million kWh of new energy electricity annually, and can store about 2.4 million kWh of electricity per charge, which can meet the daily electricity demand of 480,000 households at most.

The "wind, solar, thermal, storage and transmission" integrated development model of the Longdong to Shandong UHV DC transmission project plays an important role in effectively solving the problems of new energy consumption, improving the flexibility of the power system, and improving the safe and stable operation of the power grid. At the same time, it helps to accelerate the construction of a new power system with new energy as the main body, increase the proportion of clean energy in energy consumption, and promote the transformation of the energy structure to green and low-carbon.
