CGN's 600MW "Salt-Solar Complementary" project connected to the grid for power generation

Dec 20, 2024

On December 16, China General Nuclear Power Group (hereinafter referred to as CGN) Shandong Laizhou Tushan 600MW "Salt-Photovoltaic Complementary" project was fully connected to the grid for power generation.

This project is the largest supporting energy storage project in Shandong Province. Through the new composite industrial model of "Salt-Photovoltaic Complementary", it has successfully created a benchmark demonstration project of "one site for multiple uses", which has important demonstration significance for the exploration of new green energy solutions of "photovoltaic + energy storage" in my country.

The project is located in Tushan Town, Laizhou City, Yantai City, Shandong Province. It is the largest photovoltaic project in Shandong Province in 2022 in market-oriented bidding. It is also CGN's first "Salt-Photovoltaic Complementary" power generation project. Construction started in June 2024, with an installed capacity of 600 MW and a new 220 kV booster station. The project is equipped with independent energy storage at a ratio of 40.7%, that is, 244.2 MW/488.4 MWh, and has all the functions of independent energy storage system. The subsequent energy storage system can not only be used to regulate the power supply of photovoltaic power generation, but also participate in market-oriented transactions to improve the economy and flexibility of the power system. It is a concrete practice of the new green energy solution of "photovoltaic + energy storage".

Jiang Tonghai, general manager of CGN New Energy Shandong Branch, said that the project laid photovoltaic panels in the salt pond area, involving an area of about 9,765.2 mu of salt fields. On the premise of ensuring the output and quality of sun-dried salt, the comprehensive utilization of light resources has realized the "water photovoltaic power generation, water surface evaporation brine, underwater aquaculture" "salt-light complementary" new composite industrial model, successfully created a benchmark demonstration of "one land for multiple uses", and maximized the utilization of land resources.

The solar panels of this project adopt double-sided double-glass technology. The brine reflects light to the back of the module under the irradiation of sunlight, which can increase the power generation efficiency of the project by more than 2% to 3%. Photovoltaic modules have a thermal effect, which can significantly increase the temperature of the salt pond, which is very beneficial for brine concentration, and realizes the complementary and win-win situation of salt production and photovoltaic power generation. The thermal effect of photovoltaic modules creates a natural growth environment for brine worms in the brine pools within the salt fields, providing high-quality biological bait for aquaculture.
